Attendance and work-related illness

Sickness absence is a huge business cost, and there may be major savings to be made from reducing the level of sickness absence amongst your employees. But many employers have found that simply cracking down on perceived absenteeism or malingering may not be the right approach - in fact may present new problems such as ‘presenteeism’ (where people come to work but underperform). Sickness absence may mask a number of other issues, such as bullying or harassment, excessive pressure, or inflexible working patterns that do not take account of people’s caring responsibilities outside work.

The CBI-AXA Absence Survey 2005 reported that:

  • On average, 6.8 days are lost per employee, per year at cost of £495 per employee
  • Employers suspect that some 14% of sickness absence is not genuine
