How does it affect me? (cont.)
An organisation that takes into account people’s differences will have many business advantages.
They are more likely to:
- Hire the best - by recruiting from a wider pool of talent means you are more likely to fill vacancies with the best people for the job. Casting the net far and wide also means less time spent on the recruitment process and faster appointments.
- Create a positive reputation as a fair employer. Businesses known for their equality and diversity practices will project a more positive public image than those that are not. This can affect your reputation with potential employees and customers alike.
- Improved customer service by reflecting the diversity of the communities they serve. If employees also understand customer needs they can give you an idea how best to meet them.
- Become a more versatile and attractive employer, for example many employees, not just those but including those with family responsibilities, may want to work flexible hours, which could allow your business to operate beyond standard hours.
- Improve innovation within your organisation. Employees that come from a variety of backgrounds and offer a variety of talents will be able to draw on a broader range of experiences – leading to new approaches and ideas.
Employees increasingly want and need to balance their home and work lives and employers that are aware of the diverse needs of their workforce are attractive to potential candidates. All of the above culminate in your business being a better place to work.
