Key points

So how can you begin to mainstream diversity within your organisation? Some ideas and suggestions that you should consider are:

  • When designing the recruitment process, you should consider reviewing your equal opportunity policy to reflect more than race and gender (working patterns, disability, age etc…), and monitor this policy e.g. what percentage of your workforce are women? Are they represented at all levels of the organisation? Do organisations have an equality and diversity policy/strategy and how does it link into the organisations strategy and business plan?
  • Think about the way you recruit and select people, e.g. revising your application form to focus on skills and competences as opposed to longevity of experience and be aware of the language you use that might isolate particular groups (young graduates or mature candidates) Selection needs to be regardless of age, sex, race, disability, sexual orientation, working pattern and community background (in Northern Ireland)
  • How you ensure that the selection process eliminates bias and/or favouritism
