Social Responsibility

Social responsibility is about the effect organisations have on the society and environment in which they work. Being socially responsible boosts organisational performance (including the bottom line) by going beyond abiding by applicable legislation to create an organisation that people will want to work for and that customers will want to do business with – and so offers scope to develop a competitive edge. Specific areas for attention might include the following:

  • Diversity: including the way in which the organisation works to use all the talents of different personalities, and different gender, ethnic, disability and sexual orientation groups, with equal opportunities for all.
  • Employer responsibility: including the way in which the organisation treats employees, such as its legal obligations to employees and wider policies relating to working conditions and employee welfare.
  • Environmental impact: including the way in which the organisation aims to reduce any harmful effect its activities have on the environment.
  • Community impact: including the way in which the organisation aims to contribute to the community it works in, for example, by getting involved in and supporting community initiatives and working with local partners or suppliers.
